Being able to choose freely their own fate has always featured prominently for individuals within society. From Ancient Greece to present day, societies have aspired to attaining Democracy as a common political system. Credible and transparent elections have become a major international standard in the 21th century throughout the world.

The evolution of communication technologies, such as the Internet, social and mass media, international satellite TV, have lead to the globalisation of information. This development has allowed populations living in non-democratic countries to discover and learn from the diversity of political and electoral systems.

For many citizens throughout the world, Elections not only became a strategy but also a tool to push democracy forward in the political life of their country. As elections became more prevalent however, so too did the refinement in electoral fraud.

While some countries effectively fight against electoral fraud, other lacks the capacity to do so. In light of this want, the international community seized the opportunity to contribute and promote credible and transparent elections worldwide. Exploratory missions, technical support projects, electoral observation, are some of the main tools utilised to promote electoral good governance.
